Troubleshooting / Problems / Issues
Q: Will Tpad work if there is a power failure / internet failure?
A: If the internet connection you are using is a Wireless LAN connection, and if this connection looses its power, then Tpad will stop working.
Q: I'm having a problem using Tpad on my WiFi Mobile
A: We've tried to make Tpad as easy to setup as possible, but there are a few steps where some extra instructions will help.
• Your SMS Setup Text has failed to setup your phone – then you can manually setup your phone using these settings
http://www.tpad.com/Make_Free_VoIP_Calls_ATA_WiFi_Mobile_IPPhone_with_Tpad.php
• I can not make calls; I get the message “Address not in use” – check you are dialling in correct format
Then simply dial the full international number of your friend by using this format only:
Dial 9 + 00 + Country Code + Area Code + Number
e.g. 90092125412345XX is a Pakistan Landline
e.g. 900412827777XX is a UK Landline
Then OPTIONS - CALL - INTERNET CALL...
Tpad sets the default call to be "Internet call" but this can be changed in the Tpad settings (Options>Settings>Internet calls>Default call type).
• Our Setting up Wi-Fi guide contains our advice about optimising your setup to work with Tpad.
• You can also discuss your issues with other Tpad users on the Tpad VoIP / WiFi Forum.
Q: Why do I have one-way voice only?
A: This is probably due to the connection you are using being fire-walled. If you have control over this, please check that ports 5060 (UDP / TCP) for SIP and 10000-20000 for (UDP Media) RTP are open. If you are connected via a managed firewall at your service provider, they would also have to forward traffic on these ports to you. If you are in an office then ask your Network Administrator to open the ports below:
Action Source Destination Port Range Protocol
Allow Any Any 5060 UDP
Allow Any Any 5060 TCP
Allow Any Any 10000 - 20000 UDP (For Media)

Q: My phone is not in the list, can I still use Tpad?
A: Yes. If your phone is not on our list and you still want to use our Global VoIP Network to make call then you will need to install the FREE Fring Software.
See this link for more information:
http://forum.tpad.com/viewtopic.php?t=598
Q: How do I ensure that my handset is running the latest firmware?
A: Tpad recommends that you have the latest firmware for your phone.
How to find your mobile phones firmware:
• Press *#0000# from the main screen of your handset to check the firmware version currently installed.
• To find out whether your handset is due for an upgrade simply visit http://www.nokia.com/softwareupdate and click on the "available software updates" link.
• You will need to know your Compatible WiFi / Mobiles product code; this is found inside your phone on the white label beneath the battery.
Q: How is battery life affected when using Tpad?
A: Tpad is designed to automatically connect when in range of your known access point(s). Staying connected to Tpad allows incoming calls to reach your handset (else these are forwarded to GSM), and also means outgoing calls can be made without delay.
Whilst Tpad itself does not adversely affect battery life, connection to an access point will have an affect on your Compatible WiFi / Mobiles standby time, yet talk-time is very comparable to when making GSM calls.
Please see below for battery life on the E65 below to give you some idea:
Talk-time = 2 – 3 hrs approx on VoIP
Standby = 2 – 3 days approx
Q: How do I know if I am connected to an Access Point?
A: A WiFi connection is signified by a solid cloverleaf symbol in the top right of the screen.
Q: I have a solid clover leaf but no telephone symbol. What's wrong?
A: If you have managed to register before, this usually indicates that there is no internet connection behind the Access Point. You can check the connection status using your phone's web browser, or you can try rebooting the router. If there is a working internet connection and you have never achieved registration (see the telephone symbol) there may be a problem with the settings on your phone. You can use the "Repair Account" function from the Tpad menu (this will send a text to the server requesting your account details).
Q: How do I know if I can make/receive Tpad calls?
A: This is signified by the Internet Telephone symbol in the top right of the screen.
Technical / Network Issues
Q: How do I know whether I am connected to Tpad?
A: 1. The Internet telephony icon which can be found on the top-right of your phone's main screen, this indicates that you are connected to our Network.
Q: What is a Wireless Access Point (Wireless AP or AP)?
A: A Wireless Access Point (Wireless AP or AP) is a wireless networking device used for connecting wireless communication devices to your Internet connection. Commonly these look like regular routers and are connect to a wired network. See the Wikipedia entry for further information.
Q: What speed does my internet need to be to make a good quality call?
A: Tpad uses G711 (256 Kbps) and G729 (64 Kbps) Codec so If you don’t have high speed connection still you will be able to use Tpad with High Call Quality.
Q: What sort of internet speed / connection will I need at home?
A: Tpad recommend any type of broadband connection, most broadband offerings are good, but be cautious of low cost + cheap packages with low traffic limits or those with very high contention ratios (i.e. with many people sharing the same bandwidth). If you live in a rural area you may experience better call quality with a fixed line speed than an ADSL Max offering. Also, don’t download any big files when making a call as this will affect the call quality.
Q: What Access points do you recommend / not recommend?
A: Tpad is designed to work with most Wireless Access Points (APs). Some APs are setup with additional security designed to block VoIP and/or SIP traffic, these details are required for Tpad to work.
In order to use Tpad successfully, you must ensure your Access Point:
Not blocking UDP and TCP port 5060 or 8891.
Has any SIP firewall deactivated.

Q: I have poor voice quality, is there anything I can check at my end?
A:
If you are experiencing poor voice quality, this may be the strength of the wireless connection itself, or it may be your ISP connection. To check your wireless network, simply enter the Connections menu of your phone and select Conn. Mgr, then click on Act. Data Conn.
This will tell you the network strength. It should work at anything 40% and over, but quality will be better the nearer you are to 100%.
Try Changing the Codec to G729.
Don’t download any big files (peer to peer or bit torrent) when making a call.
Make sure no Windows Automatic Updates are running in the background.
Try turning any firewalls / anti virus programs off for 1 call to see if it improves.
Try using on your friends WiFi Connection to see if it improves.
Try using in your nearest WiFi Hotspot, they are usually high speed and will result in a very good call.
To check your network's connection to the internet for VoIP purposes, go to http://www.testyourvoip.com.
Q: Can I use Tpad to call emergency numbers e.g. 911 / 999?
A: Tpad is not a full replacement for your ordinary home telephone service and you cannot make emergency calls (911 or 999) using Tpad. This does not prevent you using your mobile phone for making emergency calls via your Cellular / GSM Provider as normal, remember 99.9% of your calls with not be emergency ones.
Q: Does Tpad work abroad are they any countries that it will not work?
A: Yes. Wherever there is a Wireless Access Point (WAP) you can use Tpad. While the Tpad VOIP service is available in many countries we are unable to advise on the legal or regulatory status of VOIP in individual territories (UAE). It is your responsibility to check the legal status of VOIP in the territory in which you wish to use it. Your ISP or similar should be able to provide you with this information.
